Do you ever feel like your behind in homeschooling?
Like everyone else is farther along than you?
Like your child is NEVER going to learn ?
Me too! I think every homeschool mom feels behind in homeschooling sometimes. We stress ourselves out, wonder what the problem is, and struggle to keep up.
I believe there are 2 leading factors in the behind mentality, and both can be fixed today!
The biggest factor in the “I’m behind” mentality is the comparison trap. We compare our kids learning capabilities to someone else’s. We compare our curriculum, our school schedule, and our teaching methods. Because of this, we just know that so and so is farther along than us.
It needs to stop!
Everyone’s children learn at a different rate. Everyone’s school day will look different. Homeschooling is not a one size fits all approach. We all need to teach our own ways, and we need to let our children learn at their own pace.
Comparison should not be a part of your daily routine ;)
We are TOO Busy
After comparison the next factor in the “I’m behind” mentality is busyness. We spend so much time running from activity to activity that we don’t have time to even “do school”.
We have co-op
And art class
And honestly, school just doesn’t happen that often. This busyness hurts our children and it makes us frazzled mommas. If this is you, I highly recommend you take a good long look at your schedule. If school is rarely getting done it is time to cut some of the activities out. I am a HUGE fan of socialization (for kids and moms) but running yourself ragged and constantly feeling behind is a season none of us should spend a lot of time in.
Now, we all have seasons of busyness. Seasons where doctors appointments, family commitments and REAL obligations get in the way of school. These are SEASONS they are not our daily life. When these seasons hit I recommend you stop most subjects and just get in the basics. Switch to a curriculum that can be taken on the go. Find an independent curriculum that requires minimal teacher involvement. This season will pass and when it does, you will be able to get back into your normal school routine.
Why Are You “Behind?”
If you are feeling behind all the time figure out which of the above scenarios fit WHY you feel this way. Then, make an effort to fix it. If it’s the comparison trap CHOOSE to see the learning going on in your own home, not your friends ;) If it is busyness make a diligent effort to find a way to get school in. None of us want to be frazzled moms constantly fretting over how well our kids are doing, so let’s make the choice to STOP!
